My winter prep extends to the air conditioning

My winter prep extends to the air conditioning

The fact that we live in a region that is dominated by a long, cold winter makes preparation a key ingredient when managing that winter.

Our winters last a minimum of five months and those are months filled with snow and ice.

The temperatures pretty much stay below freezing and end up dropping to near and below zero at times. That means we really have to count on our heating methods. Our house has a gas furnace as the primary heating source. We also have a wood stove that serves as both a secondary heat source and the emergency heating method. There are times where an HVAC company might have a really hard time getting to us if there was a gas furnace breakdown. Having the wood stove allows us to always have heating whether it’s a power outage or a gas furnace problem. But all of this comes with plenty of preparation. Of course, I leave the heating maintenance on the gas furnace to the HVAC professionals. But I also spend plenty of time getting all the wood cut, split and stacked. It takes a bunch of firewood to get through the winter around here. There are also plenty of chores for the house. You want to be sure your house is really, really tight to keep all that HVAC heating on the inside. My last bit of winter prep has to do with HVAC cooling of all things. I cover the HVAC cabinet outside the house with a hard plastic shell. This keeps the weight of the snow and ice off of delicate HVAC parts.
