The dangers with the heater

The ticking bomb is a respected image in action movies.

This is where the main action hero must carefully cut the orange wire to disarm the bomb before it goes off.

In movies, this usually happens between the 10 and 1 mark. The name can also apply to people who are about ready to pop in a fit of stress over a bad issue… Movie scenes are not ticking time clocks in the literal sense but there is a real 1 in every house. That is the gas or oil furnace that is a part of the Heating and Air Conditioning device. The chances of an explosion are quite small, especially with newer units that have built-in safety mechanisms like a heat sensor to detect if the pilot light has gone out or a furnace fan limit switch. What is a more realistic danger for the home oil heating systems is a build-up of carbon monoxide gas that can make a person sick and even prove to be fatal in areas of poor ventilation. Most houses have smoke detectors, however it is wise to put in a carbon monoxide detector. A methane gas leak has a bad odor, however, carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless! Older Heating, Ventilation and air conditioning units, just like older people, require more care and are inclined to become less efficient as the years pile up. A well-diagnosed Heating, Ventilation plus air conditioning device will last about 15-20 on average however its longevity comes at a cost with higher fuel costs.
