Not enough heating last winter

Not enough heating last winter

I want to tell you about a bit of a close call my roommate and I had over the last winter.

If you recall, it was the coldest winter on record around these parts, and had a lot more snow than we normally get.

My roomie and I are always prepared for a cold snap, but I have to admit we were not prepared enough for something of this magnitude. First we lost power, then we found our vehicles were snowed in, trapped, and unable to get into town. We could leave the house, but it was too far to walk anywhere. We learned that needed electricity for all of your heating sources is the same thing as putting all your eggs in one basket. When the basket breaks you lose everything, which in case instance meant a complete and utter lack of heating. We covered up the windows with blankets and secured ourselves in the smallest room in the house an effort to use our own trapped body heat for warmth. It worked to some degree, but it also didn’t smell great and the poor air quality had us seeking other options. This year we will not make the same mistake, we have a couple new options when it comes to heaters in the winter. This year even if we lose power we have enough wood for the furnace to keep us warm for 2 full weeks. I am also looking at replacing our cheap central heating system with one that runs of natural gas instead of electricity.
